Brief Essay Questions

As part of this online application form, students will need to answer the following questions in 750 words or less:
  • What do you hope to gain from participating in the WNO Young Associates program?
  • Describe your thinking about your academic and professional plans for high school and beyond.  Some questions to consider:  What are your long- and short-term personal and professional goals?  What information, skills, and experiences do you need to make progress on meeting these goals?  What questions or decisions are you grappling with in this area? What do you wish you knew more about? It's okay to be undecided; we just want to know where you are now.
  • Describe a time when art (of any genre) has done something powerful--in your own life or in the world around you.
If you could turn any book, movie, play, or story into an opera, what would you choose?  What would make it a good opera?

Teacher Recommendation

As prospective members of a pre-professional program preparing students for higher education and beyond, students are expected to be responsible for ensuring that all application materials are submitted completely and in a timely manner.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to communicate with his or her teacher regarding the letter of recommendation procedures and expectations.

Students will enter the email address of the referring teacher on this application.  Once the application is submitted, the teacher will receive an email with a link to upload a reference letter. Be sure to check with your teacher about his or her preferred email address, and to have the teacher whitelist submittable.com or check his or her spam folder to ensure receipt of the reference letter request.  Teacher recommendations must be received by January 22.

If possible, the referring teacher should provide the following information in the recommendation:
1. Name, contact information, and relationship to applicant (voice teacher, theater director, etc.)
2. Why this student is a good candidate for the WNO Young Associates program and how he or she will benefit from participation
3. Obstacles and areas of need the student faces in terms of future success, both as a performer and/or in general
4. Any concerns about the student's ability to attend the program or to meet expectations
