Through innovative, thought-provoking, and interactive sessions, the VSA Intersections: Arts and Special Education Conference provides professionals in the intersecting fields of arts education and special education the opportunity to share current information in research, practice, programs, and policy, and serve as a leading catalyst for change. This conference brings together educators, administrators, researchers, teaching artists, and more to build new skills, transfer knowledge, network, and, ultimately, help to shape the best practices-improving educational experiences for students with disabilities learning in and through the arts.
The DC Educator Scholarship underscores the Kennedy Center’s commitment to increasing access and equity in arts education for students in DC. This opportunity, which provides five (5) DC-based educators or teaching artists with round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, and registration expenses to attend the full VSA Intersections conference, is offered exclusively to educators at work in DC schools and the local community.
The conference itself offers opportunities to attend experiential demonstrations, hands-on workshops, insightful lectures, and invigorating panel sessions to build your capacity to reach students with disabilities in and through the arts. Whether you are based in a special education classroom, support students and teachers as a contracted teaching artist, or work in any setting in between, you are sure to develop skills and forge new connections that will push your practice forward! Additionally, through partnerships with local education agencies, you will receive a letter certifying your completion of 15 professional development hours.
Applicants will be notified of their status by May 15, 2017. Scholarship recipients must commit to registering for the conference by the early-bird deadline of July 7, 2017. Additionally, recipients must commit to participation in brief impact surveys at the completion and at one semester post-completion. Preference will be given to first-time Intersections attendees and to educators working with the Kennedy Center’s DC School and Community Initiatives. The VSA Intersections: Arts and Special Education Conference will be held at the JW Marriott in Austin, TX on August 6th and 7th, 2017.
